OneNeurology Episode 18 – Neurology on the Global Agenda: From the UN High Level Meeting to the SDGs

In this episode, we place stroke within the wider context of neurological conditions and the global non-communicable disease (NCD) agenda. Released just before the 4th UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs, the discussion underlines the urgent need to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 target of reducing premature mortality from NCDs.

We begin with a message from the Chair of the OneNeurology Partnership, Donna Walsh, followed by insights from Mia Grupper, Executive Director of the World Stroke Organization (WSO), and Prof. Jeyaraj Pandian, WSO President. Together, they examine the global burden of stroke, the importance of recognising it as a neurological condition, and WSO’s advocacy role in shaping global health policy.

Next, Dr Lucy Sykes (UK) joins colleagues from Ghana and The Gambia for a roundtable on practical collaboration between UK and West African clinicians. They highlight the challenges of providing stroke care in resource-limited settings, and how knowledge exchange, training, and locally adapted techniques are improving patient outcomes.

Dr Matilde Leonardi (Italy) then offers her perspective on the role of neurorehabilitation in neurological care and policy. Finally, people living with neurological conditions share personal reflections, bringing a powerful human voice to the global agenda.

This episode connects global advocacy, local action, rehabilitation, and lived experience—showing how progress for people affected by neurological disorders can be achieved worldwide.
